South Coast

This section discusses the coast at the far southern end of the park. Just to the north of the southern boundary there is a wide, flat beach here bordered on the north by low hills.

The beach contains a large amount of driftwood, some of the sizeable driftwood logs. Quite often these logs are fallen trees which have found their way into Redwood Creek or another waterway and floated out into the ocean where they are eventually washed up onto the beach.

Next to the beach is a broad, flat grassy area near the estuary of Redwood Creek which also contains quite a bit of driftwood.

In addition to the beauty of the cliffs, ocean, and beach, gray whales may occasionally be spotted as they pass by the coast. The view below looks south along the coast at the south boundary of Redwood National Park. The Redwood Creek Picnic Area is located next to the beach here.

Located along the beach on the southern border of the park is the Kuchel Info Center, previously known as the Redwood Information Center. It is located adjacent to the estuary of Redwood Creek and also includes a wetlands boardwalk.

Below is a picture of the information center taken several years earlier than the one above, showing some differences in the building's trim. The building itself is located on the former site of a lumber mill.

The Kuchel Visitor Center is shown below on a foggy day, next to the beach where it is located.

The Kuchel Visitor Center is staffed by National Park Service personnel who can provide information about the park, exhibits, books, maps, and other useful information.
