Large Lakes

Voyageurs National Park is known for the 4 magnificent, large lakes within the borders of the park. These lakes were part of a wilderness highway which led from Lake Superior through Rainy Lake, Lake of the Woods, the Winnipeg River, all the way to Lake Winnipeg, which provided a route for the voyageurs as they collected and transported their pelts. These lakes constitute approximately 96% of the water contained in lakes in the park

Namakan Lake Namakan Lake is 17 miles long and 3 miles wide at its widest point. The long, thin shape of the lake provides for some 146 miles of shoreline.

Some early explorers considered Namakan and Kabetogama Lakes to be just a single lake. On the east end of the lake is the Namakan River, while a long channel on the west side connects it with Kabetogama Lake. One can travel easily by water from one lake to the other. It's also possible to travel to Sand Point Lake through Namakan Narrows.

The north shore of Namakan Lake is in the province of Ontario in Canada. Some of the largest islands in the lake, such as Blackstone Island and Moose Island, are also Canadian.

Although Namakan Lake is relatively long and thin, and not nearly as immense as Rainy Lake, it is still quite large in places.

Kabetogama Lake Kabetogama Lake is the second largest lake in the park and the eighth largest lake in Minnesota, the "Land of 10,000 Lakes." The name is derived from the Indian word for "lake above the other", presumably referring to Rainy Lake. Kabetogama Lake is long and narrow, measuring about 15 miles long and 4 miles wide.

Kabetogama Lake is an excellent fishing lake, known particularly for its walleye. It also feature northern pike, muskellunge, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and lake trout.

Sand Point Lake Sand Point Lake (not pictured here) is the smallest of the 4 large lakes at about 7 1/2 miles in length and 2.5 miles wide. It runs in more or less and north-south direction south of the east end of Namakan Lake. It's very rocky.
