Tenaya Lake
Located in the central section of the park, in the high Sierras, Tenaya Lake is one of the most beautiful features of the park.
Tenaya Lake itself is bordered by some of the most spectacular, glacier-polished rock on earth, as can be seen below. The Indians called the lake Py-we-ack--"Lake of the Glistening Rocks"--but the current namesake was chief of the Yosemite Indians.
The granite mountains come to the edge of the lake itself. The basin in which this beautiful lake lies was carved by the massive Tuolumne Glacier.
Tenaya Lake is located at an altitude of 8141 feet.
The lake and its surrounding area is one of the most popular high country camping spots.
