Anacapa Buildings
The natural wonders of East Anacapa Island make it an inviting place to visit. These features are complemented by a number of Spanish style buildings which exist on the island, primarily on the eastern end. Among these buildings there is a residence, a generator building with included living quarters, a fuel storage building, a maintenance and storage building, and a water storage facility. Most of these are shown in the photograph below.
One of the primary buildings is a three bedroom ranger residence.
The residence building is located on the eastern section of the island, below the point on which the lighthouse is built.
The building below looks much like a church, but appearances can be deceiving. In reality, this is a facade which covers two 55,000 gallon redwood water tanks. The facade was built to address a problem with vandals shooting at the tanks from the sea.
Island seabirds find the roofline of one of the buildings to be an ideal place to perch.
The most memorable of the island buildings, of course, is the lighthouse, described in greater detail above.
Inspiration Point
One of the most spectacular views in the entire park is Inspiration Point, near the west end of East Anacapa Island. The approach to this viewpoint is shown below.
The actual view from Inspiration Point is shown below. The Channel Islands form an archipelago, as can be seen clearly in this picture. In the foreground is the western section of East Anacapa. Next is Middle Anacapa. The tall, ridged island is West Anacapa and Summit Peak. Partially obscured by West Anacapa is the island of Santa Cruz, visible through the haze on the horizon.
A stake for the interpretative trail is visible at Inspiration Point.
Santa Cruz island is visible beyond West Anacapa. Santa Cruz and the Anacapa Islands became separate less than 12,000 years ago.
