The centerpiece of Kings Canyon National Park is the south fork of the Kings River. This stream arises high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the eastern portion of the park and flows west through the park toward the deep canyon just outside the western borders. Below is a picture of the river as it flows past Zumwalt Meadow and the Grand Sentinel.

Along much of the course of the river its banks are heavily forested with the canyon walls as a backdrop. Such an area is pictured below near Zumwalt Meadow.

Another picture of the river and its mountainous backdrop is displayed below.

At the east end of the valley the river flows relatively slowly and forms a large pool near Muir Rock, ideal for fishing. This area is pictured below. Muir Rock can be seen just to the left of the center of the picture.

Typical of many mountain streams, the river is pretty shallow, clear, with a gravel botton. Below is a view of the river from a position along the bank near the Motor Nature Trail.
