Valley in Snow

Yosemite National Park is scenic at any season of the year, but it is particularly spectacular in the winter. Below is a shot of the Yosemite Falls area with a light covering of snow.

Only a bit of snow can be seen on the cliffs over which the lower portion of Yosemite Falls cascades. Because of the shadows cast by the direction of the sun in winter, the south side of the valley is colder in this season.

When the sky is blue, the cliffs around Yosemite Falls are particularly beautiful when covered with snow, ice, and frost.

Yosemite Falls can barely be seen when the snow covering the granite walls of the valley is heavier.

When the ceiling is low the monoliths surrounding the valley provide an almost ghostly presence.

Here is another picture of the valley in winter.

The combination of a sunny day, a blue sky, and snow on the cliffs is quite memorable.

Here is another shot of the snowy cliffs, in addition to the snow covered trees in the valley.

The floor of the Yosemite Valley receives about 90 inches of snow per year.

When Half Dome is covered by snow, there is a good chance that the vertical face of the upper section of the dome will be clear.

The Merced River reflects the stone bridge and snowy surroundings.

In some situations the Merced River and the rest of the valley are almost white.

Low clouds, snow, and ice in the branches of the tree offer another view of Yosemite Valley.

The Happy Isles Bridge passes above the Merced River.

A view from the Happy Isles Bridge shows the snowy eastern area of the valley.

There is actually a ski area in the park--Badger Pass--which was opened in 1935 as part of a plan established at that time to increase winter visitation.
